Check The Inference Jump
Identify and slow inference jumps during action-learning diagnosis.
Action learning rewards good questions, and one of the best questions is an inference check. When a team says, "Customers do not value this," pause. That may be true, but it may also be a conclusion built from selected data. The Ladder of Inference helps the group separate observation from interpretation. Use the ladder in reverse. Start with the proposed action, then ask what conclusion justifies it, what assumption supports that conclusion, what meaning was added, and what data was selected.
