Use systems-thinking levels to identify whether an action-learning intervention targets symptoms, patterns, or structures.
Systems thinking gives action learning a depth gauge. At the event level, the group asks, "What happened?" At the pattern level, it asks, "Where else does this happen, and how often?" At the structure level, it asks, "What arrangement makes this outcome likely?" The deeper the level, the more leverage the action may have, but the slower and more political it can become.
