Commit to a specific SBAR/check-back behavior for an upcoming EMS handoff.
Use SBAR plus one check-back request during a high-risk ambulance handoff. High-risk transfer of care where a missed detail could change first treatment or follow-up. When I give a high-risk EMS handoff, I will structure the first report as Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation. Before I clear, I will ask the receiver to repeat back one critical detail: last-known-well, anticoagulant status, medication given, airway concern, allergy, or refusal return precautions.
