Battlecard: “More Users Means We Have Network Effects”
Respond clearly when teams overstate growth as evidence of network effects.
A team is treating user growth as automatic proof that the platform has a defensible network effect. “We doubled users, so our network effects are clearly getting stronger.” The growth is valuable, but network effects are a different claim. To call it a network effect, we should be able to show that the extra participants improved value for others: faster matches, better selection, stronger complement availability, or higher retention after good interactions.
