Requirements That Survive Handoff
Write a requirement with enough precision for independent review and implementation.
The move: make the requirement independently verifiable. Ambiguous requirements often sound reasonable in a meeting because everyone carries the same conversation in their head. The problem appears later, when the sentence travels to a developer, tester, vendor, auditor, or future analyst who was not in the room. Handoff strips away context. A durable requirement carries enough context inside the statement. It identifies the responsible actor or system, the triggering condition, the expected behavior, and any measurable threshold.
