Near-Term Before Net-Zero Theater

Explain the practical difference between near-term and net-zero targets and why both matter in sequence.

Long-term ambition does not excuse short-term vagueness. A company can publish a compelling net-zero date and still leave its next budgeting cycle untouched. That is why SBTi differentiates near-term targets from net-zero targets. One creates immediate accountability. The other defines the destination. Near-term targets These usually cover five to ten years. They are where functions must decide what actually changes: energy contracts, equipment replacement, supplier asks, product requirements, logistics design, and incentives.
