Recall direct-but-caring phrases for performance, disagreement, and resistance moments.
Ruinous empathy vs. Radical Candor The better line preserves both relationship and accountability. “I feel like you only notice what went wrong.” A direct report reacts defensively to corrective coaching. Your line “I can see why it feels that way. Your client judgment is strong; this conversation is about the handoff pattern that is putting that judgment at risk.” Do not argue their feeling.
