Open the 1:1 With the Useful Outcome

Start a coaching 1:1 by defining the useful outcome before moving into updates.

A 1:1 becomes coaching when the employee names the useful outcome first. GROW starts with Goal because a coaching conversation needs a destination before it needs content. In leadership, this prevents the 1:1 from becoming manager-operated status extraction. The useful question is not, “What is on your list?” It is, “What would make this conversation useful by the end?” That question does three things at once: it hands ownership to the employee, reveals the decision or development need underneath the updates, and gives both people a test for whether the conversation is working.
