Extraneous load Effort caused by presentation, clutter, or unclear instructions. Cut or redesign it because it does not serve the skill. Intrinsic load Effort caused by the real complexity of the task. Sequence, chunk, or scaffold it rather than pretending it is easy. Cut vs chunk Cut noise. Chunk necessary complexity. Can we remove the worked example to make it shorter? Try saying If learners are novices, the example is not filler; it is the path that reduces search. Shortening by deleting guidance can increase cognitive load. It separates time reduction from learning efficiency.
