Calibration Is a Fairness Process

Use organizational justice principles to improve merit calibration decisions.

Merit calibration is where pay philosophy becomes experienced fairness. Three kinds of fairness Organizational justice separates fairness into outcomes, process, and treatment. Distributive justice asks whether increases are allocated fairly. Procedural justice asks whether criteria are consistent, unbiased, accurate, and correctable. Interactional justice asks whether people get respectful, honest explanations. Why calibration matters Employees may not like every pay outcome.
