Generation and selection should not fight for the same minute. The teach Divergent thinking asks for range. Convergent thinking asks for choice. Both are valuable, but they punish each other when run at the same time. If people know every idea will be judged immediately, they produce safer ideas. If people stay divergent forever, the session becomes entertainment instead of progress. The Double Diamond is useful because it legitimizes both modes.
