Close the Promise Gap Before It Becomes a Complaint
Use RATER to identify which part of service quality is at risk in a live customer interaction.
RATER is a diagnostic, not a slogan. Reliability asks, "Did we do what we said?" Assurance asks, "Does the customer believe we know how to fix this?" Tangibles ask, "What evidence can they see?" Empathy asks, "Did we recognize their specific situation?" Responsiveness asks, "Did we move quickly enough with a real next step?" The trap is treating every bad interaction as a tone problem. Tone matters, but a friendly message cannot repair a broken promise if the next step is vague. A customer who says "nobody knows" is often naming assurance and responsiveness.
