Lower the Temperature Before the Topic
Use reflective listening before problem solving when a colleague is upset.
Principle: reflect before you redirect. Name the pressure Start with what the other person is protecting: customer trust, time, workload, fairness, safety, or reputation. Paraphrase the concern Use your words, not a transcript. The test is whether they would say, "yes, that is what I mean." Ask for the concrete moment De-escalation becomes operational when the complaint turns into a specific observable event.
