Separate Positions From Interests
Identify the interest behind a positional demand.
Positions argue over one answer; interests reveal design criteria. Do not attack the first demand A rigid demand may be the only safe language the person has under pressure. Ask what the demand protects Reliability, respect, speed, fairness, or risk control are easier to solve than "my way or yours." Generate options after interests are named Once interests are explicit, the group can compare several paths instead of defending one.
