Use autonomy-supportive rules instead of shame-based screen-time targets.
Self-Determination Theory says durable motivation is supported by autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Digital wellbeing rules often fail because they attack behavior without supporting those needs. A limit that feels externally imposed can create resistance. A rule that is too hard erodes competence. A rule that isolates someone from useful social contact can undermine relatedness.
