Standard Work Finds the Abnormal
Use standardized work as a baseline for detecting process drift, not just as a training document.
The move: write the standard where the work actually happens. Standardized work establishes a repeatable baseline: the sequence, checks, materials, and cues needed to do the job safely and consistently. In a distillery, that baseline might include valve position photos, sample timing, acceptable temperature range, proof instrument check, lockout point, first bottle inspection, or the exact point where a lead must be called. The mechanism is variation control. If every operator uses a different sequence, no one can tell whether a bad outcome came from the grain, yeast, equipment, environment, or method.
