Fuel Work With Autonomy, Competence, and Relatedness
Use autonomy, competence, and relatedness to identify why a task feels draining.
Low motivation is often missing need support. Autonomy Autonomy does not mean total freedom. It means enough ownership to act willingly. You can restore it by choosing the order, defining the first draft, or negotiating a boundary. Competence Competence means you can see progress and know what good looks like. You can restore it with an example, checklist, first small step, or feedback loop. Relatedness Relatedness means the task connects to people or purpose. You can restore it by naming who benefits, who is protected, or why the work matters beyond completion.
