Map Demands Before Discipline

Separate job demands from job resources so an energy problem can be addressed at the right lever.

Do not audit effort until you audit the work system. The demand side Demands are the parts of work that spend capacity: volume, complexity, emotional labor, interruptions, ambiguity, and conflict. They are not automatically bad. A meaningful challenge can build energy when the person has enough support and control. The resource side Resources are the parts of work that help people meet demands: role clarity, autonomy, tools, staffing, feedback, social support, and decision rights.
