Facilitating Difficult Conversations: Emotional Awareness and Skill

Navigate high-stakes conversations involving criticism, bad news, or conflict by managing your own emotions and creating psychological safety.

Difficult conversations—performance feedback, terminations, conflict mediation, bad news delivery—trigger anxiety in both speaker and listener. Leaders often avoid these conversations, delaying resolution and compounding problems. Skill requires three elements: emotional self-management (staying calm and curious, not defensive), psychological safety creation (signaling the other person won't be attacked or humiliated), and clear structure (explaining the purpose, inviting input, collaborating on solutions). When executed well, difficult conversations strengthen relationships because they signal honesty and respect.
