A useful variance bridge is a thinking tool, not just a chart. First-pass buckets For most FP&A reviews, four opening buckets do most of the work: volume, price, mix, and timing. Volume explains how much business happened. Price explains what was realized per unit. Mix explains where the business landed across products, customers, channels, or geographies. Timing explains whether the result moved between periods rather than disappearing.
