GROW Before Advice

Use GROW to structure a mentoring conversation before giving advice.

Advice is not the first move; diagnosis is. A mentor who jumps straight to contacts may create motion without direction. Goal Ask what outcome the person wants. A clear goal lets the mentor distinguish learning needs from opportunity needs. Reality Map the facts: evidence, readiness, decision forums, sponsors already close to the work, and gaps that would make advocacy risky. Options Generate several paths.
