Diagnose whether pushback is primarily about facts, feelings, or identity before responding.
Every pushback sentence may contain three conversations. What Happened This layer is about facts, intentions, contribution, and impact. Use evidence and clarification here, but avoid assuming facts are the only issue. Feelings This layer is about frustration, anxiety, disappointment, pressure, or trust. If you answer feelings with a spreadsheet, the person may feel more ignored. Acknowledge the impact first, then assess what would help. Identity This layer is about what the situation implies about competence, respect, role, or moral character. Public pushback often activates this layer. Preserve dignity before presenting proof.
