Use teach-back language that lowers shame and confirms understanding.
Teach-back checks the message, not the person. The mechanism Teach-back converts understanding from a private assumption into observable behavior. It asks the patient to say the plan in their own words, which exposes missing steps, timing confusion, dose confusion, or unrealistic barriers. Why wording matters If the question sounds like a quiz, many patients will protect their dignity by saying yes.
