Use the relevance-respect test before identity language. If the reader can make the decision without the identity detail, remove it. If the detail is needed, use precise language and avoid turning a person into a category. This is especially important in performance, hiring, incident, and customer communications where extra descriptors can change how people interpret competence or credibility.
