The covering tax is the extra work of fitting in. It often looks like professionalism from the outside and self-erasure from the inside. Covering has four common signals Appearance is changing presentation to blend in. Affiliation is avoiding behaviors linked with identity. Advocacy is staying quiet when a group is stereotyped.
