Start With Impact, Not Agenda

Define a leadership-development program by target behavior, business need, and evidence of impact.

The reframe: design starts at the evidence of behavior, not at the agenda. Leadership development often gets commissioned as an event because events are easy to picture. A sponsor can imagine two days, a speaker, breakout rooms, and a certificate. Behavior change is harder to picture, so it gets postponed until evaluation. That is backwards. Use an impact brief before you choose content. Write the behavior in observable language: "managers hold priority trade-off conversations before committing team capacity" is better than "managers become more strategic." Then name the result the organization cares about and the evidence that will show movement.…
