Choose the Conflict Mode Before the Meeting

Choose a conflict-handling mode based on stakes, time, and relationship needs.

Conflict style is a choice, not a personality verdict. The Thomas-Kilmann model separates conflict behavior into assertiveness, how strongly you pursue your concern, and cooperativeness, how actively you pursue the other person's concern. That gives you five useful moves: avoiding, accommodating, competing, compromising, and collaborating. The mechanism is diagnostic: before you speak, you ask whether the issue is important, whether the relationship matters, how much time you have, and whether a durable solution is needed.
