Match the Problem to the Work Mode
Classify martech work by uncertainty so the team chooses the right management approach.
A backlog priority is not a work mode. First ask what kind of uncertainty you are facing. Clear: Standardize Known cause and known response. Use checklists, naming rules, release steps, and regression tests. Do not turn routine admin into discovery theater. Complicated: Analyze Cause and effect can be found, but expertise is needed. Use architecture review, vendor comparison, data profiling, or security assessment. Complex or Chaotic: Probe or Stabilize Complex work needs safe-to-fail experiments before conclusions. Chaotic work needs immediate containment, then a calmer diagnosis.
