North Star Value, Not Vanity
Distinguish a value-based North Star from revenue, vanity metrics, and driver KPIs.
A useful KPI is a causal model, not a decorated number. A North Star metric should name the repeated customer value the business is built to create. Revenue matters, but it is often a lagging validation of value rather than the best weekly steering wheel. A KPI tree turns that value metric into branches a team can manage: reach, activation, usage depth, quality, retention, and monetization. Leading indicators belong near the leaves because they move before the North Star or revenue; lagging indicators sit near the trunk because they confirm what happened.
