Create a metric spec that makes a KPI tree reliable across teams.
A useful KPI is a causal model, not a decorated number. A KPI without a definition is not a KPI. It is a label. Every important metric in a KPI tree needs a spec: name, purpose, formula, population, grain, source system, refresh cadence, owner, and known caveats. This is especially important for North Star and leading indicators because small definition differences change strategic decisions. The mechanism is trust.
