Stop Fixing Perks When Work Is Starved

Distinguish hygiene fixes from true motivators when choosing an engagement intervention.

Comfort can stop dissatisfaction, but meaningful work fuels motivation. Hygiene factors These include pay fairness, tools, workload, policies, and basic working conditions. Broken hygiene creates noise and resentment. Repair it quickly because people cannot engage around preventable friction. Motivators These include achievement, recognition, responsibility, growth, and the work itself. They increase engagement because people can see contribution, ownership, and progress. The manager test Ask: if we fix this, will people only complain less, or will they have more room to do work that matters?
