When Someone Says Just Pay Them More
Respond to compensation-only engagement objections without ignoring pay fairness.
A leader argues that engagement is mostly a compensation problem and manager actions are secondary. Just pay people more. That is what really motivates them. If pay is unfair, we should fix or escalate it because engagement work will sound hollow. But pay mainly removes dissatisfaction; it does not replace clear expectations, recognition, growth, voice, purpose, and meaningful responsibility. We need a pay-fairness track and a work-design track.
