Control Hazards Above PPE
Prioritize hazard controls that reduce reliance on crew memory and personal protective equipment.
Move safety upstream. Eliminate or substitute Can the hazard be removed, the item split, the route changed, or the timing moved? Avoiding a dangerous carry beats managing it bravely. Engineer the work Use equipment, barriers, dock access, ramps, powered dollies, or floor protection that changes the physical task. Good engineering controls reduce dependence on memory. Administer the work Use access photos, stop-work rules, crew pairing, time limits, and pre-job briefings. These help, but they still depend on execution discipline. PPE Gloves, footwear, eye protection, and back-support habits matter, but they should not carry the whole safety strategy.
