Interpret notional amount without confusing it with mark-to-market value or credit exposure.
Principle: Read derivative reports with three lenses: size, value, and exposure. Notional Notional is the reference base. It tells you how large the contract is for payoff or cash-flow calculation. Market Value Market value asks what the contract is worth today. It changes as prices, rates, volatility, time, and credit conditions change. Exposure Exposure asks what loss matters under performance failure or market stress. It may depend on netting, collateral, maturity, and whether the derivative offsets a real business exposure.
