Start With User-Facing SLIs
Define an SLI that measures a real user-visible service behavior rather than an internal convenience metric.
The move: measure the promise before the machinery. A service level indicator is a carefully defined quantitative measure of a behavior the service provides. The word "behavior" matters. If customers use invoice search, the indicator should be about invoice search succeeding quickly and correctly. CPU can help explain a bad state, but it does not prove the user journey is healthy. Name The User Action Start with the request, workflow, or job the user actually cares about. "Checkout submits successfully" is stronger than "checkout pods are running."
