Map Barriers With ICF

Use the ICF lens to separate body function, activity, participation, and environmental barriers in OT planning.

ICF makes the team solve the right level of problem. Four lenses Body function: capacity and impairment. Activity: task execution. Participation: involvement in life roles. Environment: barriers and facilitators around the person. What changes A grip problem may need exercise. A dressing activity problem may need task setup. A return-to-work participation problem may need employer coordination. A transport barrier may need service redesign. The trap Do not call every participation restriction an impairment problem. That habit creates more treatment visits without removing the barrier.
