Separate Open Source, Open Weights, and Source Available
Distinguish open-source AI from open weights and source-available releases before recommending a model.
The teach Openness is a rights question and an evidence question. A model is not open-source AI just because the weights can be downloaded. The OSI framing asks whether people can use, study, modify, and share the system, and whether the preferred form for modification is available. For AI systems, the preferred form is broader than a GitHub repository. You need enough data information to understand how the system was trained, the code used to process data and train or run the model, and the parameters or weights.
