Read the P&L as an operating story
Identify what each major P&L line says about operating performance.
Profit is a trail, not a single number. Read the P&L from top to bottom and pause at each margin layer before naming an action. Layer 1: Revenue Revenue is demand multiplied by price and mix. A revenue beat can still hurt profit if the incremental work is discounted or expensive to serve. Layer 2: Gross margin Gross margin is where delivery economics show up. If this line moves, inspect price realization, product mix, direct labor, input costs, freight, returns, and support load.
