PERFORMANCE-MANAGEMENT5 MIN READ
Reset Goals When Reality Changes
Decide when to preserve, revise, or retire a performance goal after conditions change.
The reframe: changing a goal is not lowering the bar; it is keeping the bar attached to reality. Preserve Keep the goal when the outcome, metric, and employee control still hold. Use the check-in to remove blockers, not rewrite standards. Revise Revise when the outcome still matters but the original metric no longer reflects controllable progress. Document the old and new measure. Retire Retire when the goal no longer supports the strategy. Replace it with a new goal rather than letting a dead target distort the review.
