Choose user-centered SLIs that make backend reliability work measurable and actionable.
Metrics are not automatically SLIs A metric becomes an SLI when it represents a service behavior users or clients care about. CPU, pod count, and connection pool depth can explain failures, but they rarely define success by themselves. Availability, latency, throughput, durability, freshness, and correctness usually get closer to the user promise. Good SLIs narrow the debate When the SLI is precise, tradeoffs become visible. You can decide whether a migration is too risky, whether a feature should wait behind reliability work, or whether an alert is noisy.
