A benchmark is not job competence
Distinguish general benchmark capability from competence in a specific workplace workflow.
The reframe: a benchmark is a map, not proof that the road is clear. A model can score well on a public evaluation and still fail your workflow. That is not hypocrisy; it is measurement. Benchmarks sample tasks under defined conditions. Workflows contain messy source data, local policy, deadlines, hidden incentives, and consequences. Use four questions before translating benchmark capability into work competence: Conditions Under what inputs and constraints was the model evaluated, and how close are those to your workflow?
