Request a useful rationale, plan, or evidence summary without trying to extract hidden chain-of-thought.
Step-by-step is a control surface, not a magic phrase. When you need judgment, ask the model to produce visible artifacts you can evaluate: criteria, evidence, assumptions, trade-offs, checks, and a concise rationale. These are useful at work because they help you spot unsupported claims and weak priorities. Avoid asking for hidden chain-of-thought. Many modern systems separate internal reasoning from the answer.
