AUDIT-READINESS5 MIN READ

Know which line you are standing in

Distinguish first-line, second-line, and third-line responsibilities during audit readiness work.

The distinction: ownership, challenge, and assurance are different jobs. First line: own and operate The process owner performs the control, keeps the evidence, resolves exceptions, and explains process changes. This is where most audit-ready evidence is created. Second line: guide and challenge Risk, compliance, security governance, or finance control teams provide methods, templates, monitoring, and challenge. They make the first line stronger without quietly taking over the control. Third line: assure independently Internal audit evaluates whether governance, risk management, and controls are working. Its value depends on independence, so it should not become the owner of management's evidence package.
