OEE: Find the Loss Before You Blame the Cell

Calculate OEE from availability, performance, and quality and interpret the biggest loss.

A robotic weld cell is labeled unreliable, but the loss data is mixed: 420 planned minutes, 72 downtime minutes, 626 actual units, 696 ideal units during runtime, and 588 good units. OEE = Availability x Performance x Quality; use the components to choose the loss to attack first. The common trap is to treat OEE as one blame number. A single score hides whether the plant should work on downtime, speed loss, or defects. Availability Runtime = 420 - 72 = 348 minutes. Availability = 348 / 420 = 82.9%.
