Design a default that fits the common case, surfaces consequences, and preserves easy opt-out.
Set the default for spare-cash auto-investing without harming users whose cash balance swings before rent or payroll clears. Default design: Common case -> Harm case -> Visible consequence -> Easy exit Optimizing only for median benefit hides asymmetric harm.
