Read the clinical phase ladder without shortcuts

Interpret what each clinical trial phase is designed to answer and what it cannot yet prove.

The move: ask what the phase was designed to decide. Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3, and Phase 4 are not just bigger numbers. They are different decision tools. Phase 1 asks whether the product can be given to humans in a controlled way and what dose, exposure, and early safety profile look like. Phase 2 asks whether there is enough efficacy and safety signal in the disease population to justify a larger test.
