Buy for the customer's job, not just the genre
Use Jobs to Be Done language to translate customer intent into assortment and display choices.
The move: listen for the progress behind the request. Jobs to Be Done asks what the customer is trying to accomplish. A bookstore request often begins as a category: fiction, memoir, parenting, business, children's, cooking. The useful signal is underneath: gift well, feel seen, solve a practical problem, escape for a weekend, explain something hard to a child, or become credible in a new role.
