Model from the datum, not the screen
Choose a datum strategy that keeps a basic CAD model stable through likely edits.
The move: make the datum story before the first sketch. A stable CAD model starts with a decision about what the part is controlled by. If the part bolts into an assembly, the bolt pattern, centerline, or mounting face often matters more than the visible edge you happened to click first. If the part is symmetric, a midplane may be stronger than an outside face.
