COACHING & MENTORING5 MIN READ

Match support to readiness

Diagnose readiness for a specific task before choosing a coaching style.

Readiness is not a personality trait. It is task-specific. A person can be ready to lead a customer call and not ready to write the renewal business case. Treat those as different coaching situations. Use two questions: Does this person have the ability for this task? Do they have the willingness or confidence to take it on? Low ability needs direction. Mixed ability needs coaching. High ability with shaky commitment needs support. High ability and high commitment earns delegation. This is how you avoid two common mistakes: calling abandonment "empowerment," and calling control "support."
