Start a 1:1 with the goal, not the agenda
Open a 1:1 by naming the useful outcome before discussing updates.
The teach Coaching starts with a destination, not a download. In GROW, the Goal stage matters because it gives the conversation a job. Without a named outcome, a 1:1 gets filled by whatever is easiest to report: project updates, inbox trivia, and manager opinions. A useful opening question does two things at once. It hands ownership to the employee, and it narrows the conversation to a specific result.
